Ping Martin about insulin Lantus (and other insulins)
Posted by Al Hardy

In the thread "Hands and Feet" we chatted about headache and bruising
reactions, so sweet little helpful me done some research. Here is a bit from
"Balance" the Diabetes UK zine, issue Sept/Nov 2003.

Begin quote

Side effects

When first starting insulin treatment, people may occasionally experience
some sensitivity around the injection site, such as swelling and itching.
This may be caused by your injection technique, so discuss this with your
healthcare team. The itching usually disappears after a few weeks of
injecting. However, although it is unusual to be allergic to insulin, some
people can, very occasionally, have a reaction to one of the added
components in the insulin - such as a preservative. This can usually be
overcome by using another insulin that does not contain that additive.

End quote

Begin Al's comment

Lantus and Novorapid are analogues, so those insulins themselves have an
added component eg aspart in the case of Novorapid.

Possibly - not certainly - that is the cause of your headache/bruising/etc.

End Al's comment

I sincerely hope to see you reporting a big improvement soon.

Al.

Thanks very much!

My initial thoughts were that I might be having a nighttime hypo and getting
the dawn effect so that my waking bgs were a little high if anything (around
12 to 13), but even with having a small snack before bedtime this didn't
improve. I will bring this up with my diabetic team. What else is there?
I found NPH so peaky that I didn't want to have to use it, but I understand
the Lente insulins are a good basal insulin.

Anyway I shall post again when I have some answers or suggestions from the
diabetic team.

thanks once again.

Martin.
