(Diabetic) Family Christmas <sigh>
Posted on 12-26-2003 | 36 Comments

Hanging out here, it's easy to forget just how wretched the general state of medical care is for people with diabetes. Yesterday was my Sweetie's family holiday get together. He comes from a very large family (10 siblings in his father's generation.) All the women in the family seem to have inherited a tendencey towards diabetes. Before dinner I sat in on a conversation between several of the younger women about their diabetic pregnancies (one of which is going on now.) Several of the...

The genetic element of T2 is a sobering thought since it tends to suggest that all T2s are ultimately related and share common ancestors in the remote past. Mind you genealogists tells us that every English person is descended from King John ( died 1216 ) through one of his seventeen children so that has to be true anyway. My sister has done some family tree stuff that goes back hundreds of years. I was toying with the idea of concentrating on death certificates, cause of death, underlying...

I have had three different doctors tell me that pp blood sugar monitering is useless. All it does is tell you wheteher or not you overate they say. While fasting bg checking allows you to adjust your meal before eating for better control over your bg. Because if it is high, or low then, you can adjust your eating before meals. And avoid possible spikes. I have always tested before meals and my A1c in 13 years has never been above six. Also the doctor I am seeing now says he would like my ...

OT: Oozing store clerk
Posted on 12-25-2003 | 111 Comments

My checkout clerk at the Albertson's supermarket had a runny nose as he handled all my food packages across the scanner. That was yesterday. I still have everything in my car trunk. My question is, how long do I have to wait until it is safe to bring my groceries into the house? What is the lifespan of a virus on an ordinary can of food? I've considered shoving each bag of groceries into the microwave oven for a minute. I'm thinking that might kill any viruses, maybe. Also, I...

I know we've talked alot about this very important numeric report. Unless someone can give me a precise analytical method (including flaws) in how it is determined or I'll pursue it myself and promise to get back with the group. My concern is 1) different techniques/normals used 2) why it can give misleading results 3) issues of "averages", hypos negating hypers, "sticking" to hemaglobin as a measure. I good lab person could answer all these confusing issues but if none can explain it, I'll...

Tonight in Oz is Christmas Eve. My DH took me out for a nice dinner, and then we went for a drive around our town. The exhausting heat of the day was gone, and it was just cool enough to be a delight to be out, driving around with the windows down. Keeping in mind that this is a very SMALL and not very prosperous town, the number of houses that are decorated is quite remarkable.

For FEMALE Diabetics only!!!
Posted on 12-25-2003 | 29 Comments

Hi Ladies! I am 19 and recently had my first GYN exam (very scary, but no problems). My doctor said that it's normal for many female diabetics to have a "low-grade yeast infection" or a little bit of discharge all the time. Is this the case with any of you? I tend to have a little bit of discharge a lot, but I also get a lot of UTI's.

Charlie, I was an practicing RN for 30 odd years, and it was usually one of the pts, or their families that made my day. We didn't often get those little rewards, but when they came along...it was a true treasure. I still see some of my old pts, and they always remember about some (what seemed to me....a small thing) that I had done for them or their loved ones. I have had wonderful people take care of me when I was very ill, and not able to do it for myself. I must say that my Mom has...
