OT Dad is in hospital
Posted on 12-30-2003 | 68 Comments

My Dad wasn't feeling well yesterday. Was throwing up and complaining of back pain. Went to Dr. today. Had elevated white cell count, and they a CT scan. The results just came back and the Dr. said it was his pancreas. Told my Mom to get him to the ER. At this point I don't know any more. I look this up and it could be a whole slew of things, including diabetes. :( I would appreciate it if you could keep him in your thoughts. Thanks! -- Type 2 http://users.bestweb.net/~jbove/

Checking bgs
Posted on 12-30-2003 | 10 Comments

I take all my meds after eating, so my fasting bg is tested without any meds. So, after eating each meal, I take my meds. Then 1 hour and 2 hour after I check again. Is this the way others do it? TIA

Medication Time?

I take both glucovance and actos. Can anyone tell me if there is an optimum time for taking these? I mean other than "with meals." At present I take them with dinner, my largest meal.

Atkins Advantage Shakes?
Posted on 12-29-2003 | 5 Comments

Hi All, I am trying to lose weight and I am considering trying Atkins Advantage Shakes as a morning meal replacement. My morning FBG are my highest readings of the day, usually varying from 7.1 to 8.4 (128 to 151), so I usually don't eat any carbs in the morning for breakfast. One of these Atkins Shakes contains only 1 NET carb so I figured, what the

OT- New (to me) Security Apps.

Been fiddling with things a bit lately, and am trying some new stuff. Switched to a 30 trial of Sygate Personal Firewall v 5.5, and I think it's a keeper. Also, I have always been a big supporter of Spybot S&D, and I will continue to use it, but I found something that finds some things Spybot doesn't. Called "Hijack This". A freebie. you can find it here: http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html Another worthy freebie app can be found on the same page. For you Winblowz users out...

Apparently exercise does work
Posted on 12-29-2003 | 9 Comments

I hosted family at my house over Christmas, which for me means cooking almost continuous bounteous meals, and while I'm now exhausted from running myself ragged cooking, serving, cleaning up, preparing for the next meal, etc., I proved to myself the advantage of exercise after eating carbs. For the holiday, and because I figured I was going to be moving my body around, I allowed myself mashed potatoes with my turkey, sugar-sweetened cranberry sauce, custard and whipped cream both sweetened...

AWOL
Posted on 12-29-2003 | 26 Comments

Well hi to all... the new and the old. I've been absent from this list for about a month now, though I have been reading most every post, I have not been able to respond. I began a new job at the beginning of November, a job that entails a start up of a new project. It has been all consuming, in both mind and body. 14 hour days and most weekends are not uncommon. And the end is not in sight (unless you consider April in sight).

Tom, it is best to read scripture in context, not cut and paste in support of one's favorite theory. Just before the following section in Acts is: =3] saying, "Why did you go to uncircumcised men and eat with them?" and following it: =28] and he said to them, "You yourselves know how unlawful it is for a Jew to associate with or to visit any one of another nation; but God has shown me that I should not call any man common or unclean.

I've been trying to access Rick Mendosa's web site. I can get to the main page as well as some of the other links, but the link I am really interested in http://www.mendosa.com/hormones_diabetes_obesity.htm is the one I cannot get to. The story of my life <g> (I get an "HTTP 404 - File not found / Internet Explorer" error). Here's the article - Diabetes News December 24, 2003 Startling new research posits that too much glucagon, rather than insulin resistance, causes type 2 diabetes. It...

Hello... I'm 47 yrs old and up to last month I hadn't been to a doctor in16 years... Five years ago or so I begin losing weight rather rapidly without really doing anything to foster that weight loss. I went from 270 Lbs on a 5'10" frame to around 217 Lbs. within a 3 month period...and did not gain it back despite being extremely inactive and not neccesarily watching my diet(I did stop eating all types of fast foods for financial reasons)...

Glycerin, gycerine, glycerol
Posted on 12-29-2003 | 2 Comments

Does anybody know how many carbs are in glycerin per ounce---and with a source? I know all about the argument as to why LC food manufacturers try not to list it. I just need numbers. I've tried googling but keep on winding up with FDA vs. food manufacturers' stories on proper listing of glycerin as a carb/sugar alcohol. Please---nothing ancedotal, just a hard number. Thanks, Bob

Bron, A word of warning from a recent Dx - do not believe everything the medics tell you. I was told several things at dx and later by a dietician which in retrospect could have been very dodgy. If in doubt, ask on this newsgroup - although individual experiences vary, we all know the effect that certain foods have on our numbers. The medics see things from a different viewpoint - I was always used to a plateload of pasta, whereas my dietician's idea of a portion is closer to 4 strands of...

OT? Daughters Bloodsugar weird???
Posted on 12-28-2003 | 7 Comments

Hiya all. I pop in here sometimes for info. Thanks for the previous help! Now I have another question....... My 10yr old daughter was over here last weekend. She decided to give her cat a bath. Not smart, I know! Anyway when she came out of the bathroom, she asked if I would test her blood on my machine. So I did and it came out at 57! I couldn't believe it at first so I redid it on another machine. Came out at 60. I took the blood from her uper arm where it wasn't watered down and...
