Stacy, From what I am reading here you appear to have your intentions in the right place, your trouble seems to be in finding the information you need to get you rolling in the right direction. I must have missed when you were diagnosed, and I sure missed the part about having six children. Wow. That's awsome. I was worn out by two.

Tom, the person in the article was a quack, a criminal who had the parents use herb drops instead of the tried and true surgery that would have cured the child. What you present below is a group of honest researchers reporting to fellow folk an abverse effect in one treatment approach, so others may have a lower risk. George Washington died from blood letting, millions before him and untold tousands after him before word got around that it was a deadly "treatment" used so broadly. Once it...

Need Glucose Monitor Advice
Posted on 02-14-2004 | 24 Comments

My hubby, a type 2 for about 4 years has decided to start testing his blood again (yahoo!). He would like to find a new monitor (is that right word?) to test his blood glucose levels. Does anyone have any info on where I can find a good comparison of some of the different types? Ideally he's like one that he can use to prick somewhere other than his finger tips (arm). He's like to be able to download the info to his computer to analyze it there (rather than writing retults down on paper). ...

Somebody passed out at school today.
Posted on 02-14-2004 | 3 Comments

I was teaching science today, seventh grade. During a free period, a student ran into the office "Tom Smith (fake name) passed out and fell out of his chair and hit his head!" I followed her back to the room. Assistant Principal got there before me. Tom was conscious. We walked him to the nurse's office but the nurse was out. Ass't P. asked various questions, including, "Are you diabetic?"

Lipitor gives me leg cramps real bad.

neglect of diabetes , Long (probably)
Posted on 02-14-2004 | 6 Comments

Hello to all. and apologies if this turns out a long post. My name is Derek, I am 39yrs old and been type 1diabetic for 10yrs. My problem is taking my diabetes serious. No matter what happens I cannot seem to get it into my thick skull everything I do could kill me. I totally neglect my diabetes. Don't get me wrong, I test several times a day and never miss taking my insulin. It is all the other things I do. I was overweight a year ago and someone suggested taking amphetamines. So I tried...

A Visit to the Endocrinologist
Posted on 02-14-2004 | 15 Comments

It was with some trepidation that I scheduled a visit to an endocrinologist recently. My insulin prescription had run out and the pharmacy politely informed me that my clinic said "No refills until you see an endo." So I show up fifteen minutes early, anticipating being sent off to the lab. "Oh, we're not going to bother with that today. Your A1C is above the Lab Normal range, so the other values don't really matter. And besides you're a Type 2."

I had a green leafy and baby spinach salad for dinner. It had some walnuts, a few dried cranberries and a little sprinkle of roasted almonds with a fat free raspberry dressing... Oh and I threw on some red onions. I also had one small tortilla.. its herb and garlic.. no fat and a serving of sugar free yogurt for dinner. I started out with my BG at 173 and an hour later it was 182. Im thinking this is a good thing? Hopefully in an hour from now it will be below the 173 I started at.

OT Dr Watson--DNA
Posted on 02-14-2004 | 10 Comments

One advantage of being old and handicapped is you have the opportunity to set back and reflect. This AM, PBS had a feature that was primarily an interview with Dr. Watson. He was the co discover of how DNA works. It covers many issues we discuss. Is it possible to alter the genetic factors that may dispose many to develop diabetes?

ANOTHER question.. LOL
Posted on 02-14-2004 | 14 Comments

Sorry.. I guess this might happen from time to time until I get a better understanding of what is happening to me. The thing that bothers me is that I am not new to this.... I guess Im just finally serious and want to know what the hell to do.. The question is... Nicotine gum... can that raise my sugars??? I dont have an empty box... I always throw them out and store my gum in a cabinet... so I dont know the ingredients. I suppose I can look that up. I shouldnt even be chewing this crap...

OT Update on Dad.
Posted on 02-14-2004 | 4 Comments

He saw the surgeon again today. He will have to have surgery in the near future and they now say all the problems are related to Spherocytosis. My brother has this and his teen aged son has also tested positive for it. Sounds like my Dad has a good Dr. who is on top of things. I think I will see the same Dr. after we move back there, just to be checked myself for Spherocytosis. It does run in families and both my daughter and myself have had symptoms that sound to me like they could be it. ...

Statins

VBH wrote: Less than 2% of patients report side-effects from what I've been able to find out - almost certainly you'll be fine. If your GP is on the ball, he/she should schedule a liver blood test for 2 months or so after you start on statins. Liver damage is one of the more serious possible effects that you may not notice. Regular liver tests are recommended while using statins, but you're probably already having those because of the beast.

See that you deal with the CRP in your life

G'day G'day Folks, Time and again it is emphasised that dealing with inflammation is fundamental to living with T2 diabetics. Here is one more reason ... if you see what I mean. http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/468935?mpid=24686 Best wishes,

It's not just Walmart but Macy's, Nordstroms. Robinsons etc. Even the better stores are loaded with the fat ladies shopping for size 8 clothing when they must wear a 28. There should be something that weighs and measures people entering the better stores to keep them out. Kinda like when you go to Disney Land and they have those height and weight limits for their rides. Oh life would be so much more pleasant. Mikee53@MSND.com wrote:

OT joke
Posted on 02-14-2004 | 2 Comments

Found this joke on alt.coffee....... Sam and Edith were 85 years old, and had been married for sixty years. Though they were far from rich, they managed to get by because they watched their pennies. Though not young, they were both in very good health, largely due to the wife's insistence on healthy foods and exercise for the

OT: Warning on Poster (long)

This is a warning on a specific poster, something I rarely do; AFAIK this is my first. Those of you who don't read alt.food.diabetes will not be aware of it. A couple of weeks ago we started seeing posts on all three diabetes ngs from bistoury@earthlink.net . In reading and responding some of the posts seemed a little extreme, but not unusually so for us. Then the name started appearing on a.f.d, posting some very high carb recipes. The following is an edited selection of responses from...

My breakfast and lunch and my blood sugar levels.
Posted on 02-13-2004 | 6 Comments

I see a few newbie's asking questions about food - so I decided to show you what I eat and my numbers that followed. the only advice I want you to get from this - is to see a dietitian for some kind of starting point for a healthy diet. didn't feel like eating breakfast but knew I should. so I tried a meal replacement drink - NO ITS NOT THE BEST CHOICE I am only human. nutritional information for this drink can be found here. YOUR NUMBERS WILL BE DIFFERENT
