- OT Newman's Own Pop's Corn
- Posted by Julie Bove
I can't remember now who said they ate this stuff, but I bought some to take
with me on our last trip to PA. I normally pop plain popcorn in olive oil
at home, but this stuff looked a lot more portable and it has no trans-fats.
I did not buy the lightly salted kind that the poster ate because I don't
like lightly salted popcorn. I think the only choices I had at the store I
shopped at were that kind and the "butter". I bought the "butter", which I
discovered is some sort of butter flavoring.
This stuff is the worst! I am not sure what is in it that causes it, but it
leaves a horrible greasy feeling in the mouth. Hard to describe because the
popcorn itself doesn't taste greasy. In fact it doesn't taste very good to
me at all, and not really even like popcorn. Smells funny too. Neither my
niece nor my daughter liked it either. This odd greasy feeling was so bad
that I had to brush my teeth and tongue, not once but twice after I ate it.
Never again!
The ingredients are: Organic Popcorn, Organic Palm Oil, Natural Butter
flavor, Salt, Annatto (for color) and Vitamin E (to preserve freshness).
I wonder if the Vitamin E was to blame? At any rate, I won't be buying this
stuff again! I do like some of his other products though.

Hi there Julie,
When you listed the ingredients, one thing jumped out at me - the
palm oil!
That's probably what was giving you the "mouth feel" that you found
so unpleasant. I have nothing against palm oil actually, but I find
it somewhat amusing to eliminate butter, only to replace it with
palm oil.
Palm oil is composed of approx 49.3 % saturated fats, 37%
monosaturated fats, and 9.3% polyunsaturated fats. The remaining 5%
of fats are undifferentiated.
So about half of the fat is saturated anyway.
The there's the "butter flavour". Who knows *what* that is? What I
do know is that flavours that are not associated with the original
source rarely taste quite the same. Fats are also notorious for
going "rancid", despite our best efforts at keeping them "fresh".
In that case, the saturated fat is the better "keeper". That alone
could have been responsible for the unpleasant smell. Palm oil does
tend to keep better than a lot of other fats, but it would surely
have it's limits if stored at room temperature or higher. You may
very well have purchased some "stale" stuff.
The whole thing sounds yucky to me, even without tasting it!
Thanks for sharing.
Annette

Might be the palm oil. That stuff is pretty slick. I HATE pre-packaged
micor-wave popcorn. The stuff is REALLY foul. I like my organic,
air-popped, sprayed lightly with canola oil, and salted kind I make at home.
If I can't have that, I don't eat it. Even most movie houses have second
rate popcorn now. (If you can't tell, I love my popcorn and it's something
I can eat a few cups of for a snack with no problem.)

There is one remaining package. It is due to expire soon and there is a
warning on the box that it must be stored at no warmer than room temperature
or the oil might seep through the package. My husband has been eating it.
He hasn't complained. I think he has damaged taste buds or something. He
puts tons of salt on everything, even if it is already salted. And he eats
hot sauce with warning labels on it because it is so potent.

I only bought this because we were staying at my Mother in law's house.
She's in a nursing home now, so nobody actually lives in the house. I don't
like to haul a bunch of food over there and back home again. She lives in
PA and we live in NY. I also don't like to cook there because that's also a
pain what with the house not being used. There is a microwave, so I'll
stick pre-packaged stuff in there. I used to use Jiffy Pop at her house,
but I don't think they even make that stuff any more. And if they do, it's
probably loaded with trans-fats too. Guess I'll just eat toast for my
snack next time I go there.

Julie, I dont think I have had Newmans, but you are right about his
other products. I guess people have different taste buds. I would have
gotten the light salted and passed on the butter. How did the popcorn
affect your bgs. Was it low in carbs.
Now you know what you dont like. lol

It didn't affect my BG at all because I didn't eat more than a few pieces of
it! I ate a piece of toast instead. I've found that I can now eat popcorn
again. My high morning fasting seems to be a thing of the past. Taking my
second dose of Metformin at bedtime has worked wonders for me and the lemon
juice I've been drinking seems to have lowered it further. I do have to
limit my popcorn intake though because it's easy to eat too much. I usually
pop it in a pan with olive oil and add butter flavored popcorn salt.
