- Offbeat Symptoms

Hi,
I have Type 2 diabetes and am on Lantus (insulin), because the other
meds I'm on couldn't bring my blood sugar down. Within the last year I
have been getting cramps in my calves and my feet. Today while sneezing
I was hit with what felt like a diaphramatic cramp that lasted for
hours.
I'm 44, is this just me getting old or new diabetes symptoms?

I also get severe leg cramps, particularly in the wee small hours of
the night if the blanket is too light and my legs get cold (I've
started wearing socks to bed and that seems to help). However, I
don't think it's necessarily related to diabetes, because it's a
frequent discussion on my other medical list.
I also take quinine bisulphate when it is really severe, but I try to
minimise it's use.

A lot of different things can cause such cramping, including some
medications. Cramps/pain in the diaphram or stomach area can even
be a warning of a heart attack! It could be anything. So DO see
your doctor about this.
This group is no place for a diagnosis. Your doctor knows your
medical history, medications etc., and can examine you for any other
symptoms.
Although diabetes can cause claudation, (restriction of the arteries
in the legs and feet), that body cramp is not one I have heard of.
And 44 is NOT old. PLEASE get it checked out pronto!

Hi BMCC, by any chance are you on diuretics, or do you have low levels
of potassium because that can cause leg cramps.

As I read your reply, another cause of that awful diaphram cramp
came to mind - a herniated diaphram - where a bit of the intestine
gets caught in a little hole in the diaphram, and gets "pinched".
The hole is caused by the place where the major arteries etc go
through it, and have not totally sealed tight as per normal.
A friend of mine was missed diagnosed with a heart attack the first
time one of those cramps hit her. There is a medical name for this
condition, which I don't remember. The fact that it was triggered
by a sneeze sounds rather typical. Then again, I'm just guessing -
but you see what I mean about getting your doctor to check you out.
If it *IS* a hernia, it is easily repaired with a small operation,
but don't just let it go - a trapped intestine can turn nasty very
quickly.
Although it seems like it sometimes, not every pain or symptom is
related to diabetes! Hope you get some answers soon.

Ahhhh, thanks Wes. Actually, I "think" I remember now that it was
called a Hiatus hernia. It was long time ago.
And medical names for conditions change, as well. Still, it is a
condition that could cause the symptoms described, and is a good
example of the need for getting a proper examination and dx.
It sure isn't anything to do with diabetes that I've heard of.
