I'm perhaps experiencing diabetes like symptoms and I was hoping some
of you more experienced folks can weigh in. To start, I would seek
medical help but I'm far away from home where medical services are
limited (internet cafes are however available).

I'm 55 y.o male 5'10" 160 lbs. My symptom has been a constant urge to
void (urinate/pee). It started a few days ago. Within a ½ hour of
using the bathroom I feel the urge to void again. I get up 1x or 2x
per night. My fluid intake is about 60oz per day. That includes
water and fruit juice. In fact, I sometimes have to force myself to
drink more water just to fulfill the 60oz amount; I don't recall ever
having an urge to drink. My last fasting glucose test was 92 (mg/dl)
(March ‘03). I've heard that excess urination is a sign for diabetes.
What is not clear is whether this means excess volume or excessive
visits to the bathroom. I've checked my output and it is about
1.2-1.4 liters per day. I've maintained my current weight of about
the past 10 years. I have not noticed any blurriness other than
slowly becoming farsighted that I have been attributing to aging. I
run about 30 miles per week and row or x-country ski about 10 miles
per week depending on weather.

Here are some other blood numbers if it is helpful
LDL 83
HDL 66
VLDL 9
Total Cholesterol 158
Cholesterol Ratio 2.4
Triglycerides 46

I'm a bit about this symptom and considering cutting my trip short if
it continues or worsens or other new diabetic symptoms appear. Thanks
in advance for you feedback.

It could be so many things other than diabetes, that you really need to
see a doctor. Sorry, but internet cafes can be really dangerous for
getting a diagnosis of any kind, but can be great support after the
diagnosis. Good luck and keep us posted.

You don't seem to be drinking an excess amount as many diabetics do, although
truthfully I never did either. Without testing no one can know for sure but it
sounds possible that you may have a urinary tract infection. They can cause
increased urination too.

Where are you that you can't get to a Dr? If a city has internet access you
would think they had a doctor.

Uncontrolled diabetes causes folks to urininate a lot because their
blood sugars are high and out-of-control. When blood sugars get too
high, the kidneys start to remove sugar from the blood, and that process
produces a lot of urine.

They warn folks about frequent urination in order to induce them to somehow
get their blood sugars tested.

So have your blood sugars tested.

If you are really in a hurry, pick up a home blood sugar testing kit
(meter and strips) from a pharmacy and test your own.

The Wal-Mart Relion brand is the least expensive, (meter + strips = $30)
and will easily cost half of what the other brands cost.

Non-diabetics rarely exceed 140 mg/dL at 2 hours after eating a
carb-rich-meal.

Uncontrolled diabetics who are urinating a lot would be expected to be
higher than 180 mg/dL, perhaps most of the day.

Many full-blown diabetics exhibit near 300 mg/dL when first tested.
Actually, some of us were so high the meters couldn't go that high.

Nice lipid panel. Keep on doing whatever you have been doing.

Say. . .did anybody ever tell you that running 30 miles per week and rowing
or X-country skiing 10 miles a week and staying slender is a wonderful way
to prevent Type 2 diabetes?

(Neither healthy Lifestyle or just about anything else will prevent Type 1
diabetes)

Regards
Old Al

Relax. I am not a doc. With such a low FBG level, however, I doubt it's DM.
However you should see your doc when the trip is over. There are many simple
answers to what you're experiencing.

May not be diabetes, but I'm not a doctor and no one should be giving
you an "internet" diagnosis, anyway.

COULD be a urinary problem! prostate issue or some other urinary
related issue.

then again, what you SHOULD be doing is getting yourself to a Dr.

don't seek medical advice from a bunch of strangers!

Nobody here could help you except to tell you that you must seek immediate
medical attention if you think you have diabetes. Diabetes is not diagnosed
by symptoms alone. Given your height and weight, if you do have diabetes,
it's likely to be type 1 which is life threatening if not treated
immediately. Stop drinking fruit juice until you know for sure. Fruit
juice is loaded with carbs and it is carbs that raise our BG. Of course,
you could have some other medical problem that is not diabetes. You still
should seek medical attention.

the biggest sign you can look for is feeling
of wanting to sleep forever after a large meal.
if you do.. get a meter start testing. or get to
the docs for further testing. your profile isn't
one of a diabetic.. though it doesn't actually
pick profiles.

It sounds to me like you probably have a urinary tract infection.

If so, you need to see a doctor and get it cultured and get a prescription
for an antibiotic.

Hi,
Your numbers are excellent and don't scream diabetes.
An urge to urinate could be caused by other causes besides diabetes. For
instance BPH, an enlargement of the prostate gland, quite typical of males
over 50, or prostatitis, an inflammation of the gland. Both are treatable
and I'm speaking from personal experience. I would suggest a visit to an
urologist.

Hi there David,

It looks like you've got a choice;

Either cut your trip short, or ignore the whole thing.

There may be pressing reasons for wishing to continue the trip. You didn't
say.

OTOH, if things get worse, (and they *might* get worse very quickly), do you
really want to be so far from medical help?
Your very life may be at stake, depending on where you are at the moment,
what health facilities ARE available, and how far you are from such help.
Being far from home as well as in an isolated location is no place to be
when you are ill. What is your life worth? Don't forget, a deteriorating
condition is not helpful when facing a long trip home.

I have no idea what the underlying cause is, but whatever it is, you DO need
a doctor for a diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

Apart from all that, IMHO, the information you have provided does not seem
to indicate T2 diabetes. Actually that would be the lessor of the
possibilies. Of course, if it is T1, then seeing a doctor ASAP could very
well be essential for your survival. That would also apply for a urinary
tract infection, or any infection anyway. Kidneys are essential organs, and
need to be kept in good condition. Infections have a habit of becoming
serious, very quickly.

Me, I'd be outta there, pronto.

It's your choice.

To All,

Thanks for your feedback so far. As I mentioned I would certainly see
a physician if I were home or any place where I could trust the
doctors, let alone accurately communicate with them. I happen to be
in Asia doing research. I'm not excited about trying to get medical
help here. Plus, I would not want my grant pulled unnecessarily
because of a panic attack.

If you can recall you own experiences do you remember if frequent
urination was the resulted of increased output or just more frequent
bathroom brakes? I can understand increased thirst (H20 consumption)
resulting in increased output. My output is normal and thirst is
normal to slightly sub-adaquate by the 64oz/day standard.

In hindsight, were there other symptoms you had that now make sense to
you? What were they? While I don't expect a diagnosis over the
internet, my goal is to better understand the symptoms of diabetes
before I decide my course of action.

Thanks again,

David if I were a betting woman I would bet my stake that you are NOT
diabetic. Your numbers are too good for that and you really have no
symptoms other than frequent (according to you) urination. That
frequency could as easiy be due to anxiety as to anything. If I were
away from home and not feeling well, I'd be pretty anxious myself!
Google up "frequent urination" and you'll see 117,000 possible
reasons.

You could also Google up "diabetes mellitus" and get all the symptoms,
risk factors, etc, and thus reassure yourself that you do NOT have
this disorder.

Good luck, David. Relax, focus on your breath, keep active, eat well,
get enough sleep, and enjoy your time in one of the most fascinating
cultures on earth!

Folks,

I have slept very little the past 3 nights worring about my possible
diabetic symptoms. By shear coincidence there is someone in our group
that is diabetic. I asked him to help me use his blood meter. I have
a fasting BG of 110.

How concerned should I be? Can the fact that I've been stressing out
over this for the past 72 hours affect by BG. I also have been sick
with a head cold that started a week before this whole thing but I'm
just getting over the tail end of it. Would that be related?

BTW, I've sent a fax to my doctor describing this. His comment was
not to worried that 110 given history and current situation is not
alarming but I should chedkin with him when I return. Do you think he
is being to lax here?

I guess I'm scared shitless of having diabetes and feel very helpless.
Especially being so far rom home.

Thanks for listening

nope, he is using his judgement, and your doctor is best placed to
advise you. Listen to him.

Just follow the advice of your doctor. To give you a perspective on
this, when I was diagnosed I had a fbg of 13.6mmol/l which is in your
numbers 281. I would be inclined to agree with the advice of your doc.

I understand that in diabetes increased thirst is the RESULT of
increased urination. When blood glucose is high, the kidneys dump the
sugar out of the system. That results in loss of fluids. Therefore,
you get thirsty to replace the fluids lost with the glucose.

Not totally correct. Increased thirst is the RESULT of dehydration PERIOD.
Dehydration is the result of high glucose. High glucose will make you
urinate
more often because the kidneys are trying to dump toxins out.
