Flu shots

My endo's PA called urging me to get a flu shot. She said
the doctor had her call all her diabetic patients and urge
them to get shots.

The flu vaccine may be in short supply this year, get yours
early. I got mine Friday.

Happy Holidays,

I got the same call from my endo. I also got my shot Friday.
No after effects at all other than minor pain in my arm,
which only lasted 4-5 hours.

Play it safe and get yours.

My GP did the same thing, and just like last year (and the year before and
the year before and the year before, blah blah-) I declined the offer. I
figure if you don't GET 'flu or colds (and I don't) then the 'flu shot is a
waste of pain:-)

I've never bothered much before with flu shots, and as a T1 you'd think i
had better motivation. I won't be bothering next year as as far as i can
tell i've had just as many coughs and colds as ever and still no sign of
the flu. IMHO we live a life that is too clean and free of germs and
bacteria which is why we're all getting ill more often. No one has any
natural resistance to anything anymore ... we all just pop a pill at the
first sign of trouble. Insulin is the only prescrition drug i take and i
resist anything like pain killers or cough and cold medecines too. Figure
it;s best to fight them naturally if you can.

Or if you're like me, you get the flu from getting the flu shot! I know
people keep saying this isn't true, but in my case it seems to be. I got
the flu shot twice and both times became so sick within two days that I had
to go back to the Dr. My husband got the flu shot at work, and not only did
he get the flu within 24 hours, but he passed it on to me! He is required
to get the shot again this year at work. I will make him keep his distance
from me after he gets it.

That is your choice Beav. I do hope you know how many people die from influenza
every single year and how much more at risk we diabetics are. My father died
from the flu when he was only 32 years old. There were no flu shots then.

If you refuse to listen to your doctor's advise then why do you go to him/her?

According to medical experts that is not possible since today's vaccine contains
no live virus or bacteria. They do see a number of patients that were already
coming down with something when they had the shot, but did not know it so they
always blame the shot.

They say they have not been able to confirm one case of someone getting the flu
from the vaccine since way back when we had the swine flu.

I hate the statement "that which doesn't kill you makes you stronger."
Most people who believe it have been able to overcome hardships, whether by
good fortune or hard work. And I'm happy for them. But there are a lot of
people who for whatever reason suffer endlessly and are not made any
stronger by their suffering. In fact they are weakened. A trip to a place
such as a Veterans' hospital or a nursing home where there might be a young
person who can't live on his own would bear this out. I guess what bothers
me when I hear this statement, is that there's the presumption that it's the
victim's fault if they are not able to rise to the occasion and overcome the
hardship. The statement is just too cavalier and callous for me.

I got mine at the first opportunity on October 1. I even paid for it out of
my own pocket, rather than waiting for when I could get it for free through
my insurance. I work with kids, so I try to minimize my exposure.

That is exactly what a vaccine does. It is not a chemical or a "cure."

Vaccines work by infecting you with a mild case of the disease. Some, like
the polio vaccine, use a "crippled" virus that is incapable of replication.
Others, like the flu vaccine, use a dead virus. Still others, such as early
smallpox vaccines, use a closely related, non-lethal virus.

What happens is your immune system will react exactly as if it were infected
by the virus. Certain cells recognize the viral invaders, and the search is
on to find and replicate the proper antibodies. After the "threat" has been
eliminated, your body will "remember" the needed antibodies, producing
special blood cells whose only purpose is to "wake up" and start the process
again if the virus returns. If you latter get sick for real, your body
already has the tools handy to fight it off; the virus will be killed off
before it has a chance to get a foothold. That means much less severe
sickness, much less chance of death and a much faster recovery time.

*Especially* for diabetics, vaccines are important. The viral fighting part
of the human immune system co-opts the "flags" our cells put out to catch
insulin; as a result, our blood sugar usually skyrockets when we get sick.
And since our high glucose is a literal smorgasbord for bacteria, we are at
serious risk of secondary bacterial infection while our bodies are busy
fighting off a viral invader (bacterial pneumonia is one of the leading
reasons why people who get the influenza virus die.)

My mom thought for a long time that this was the case with her. It turned out,
however, that she is allergic to a protein found in raw (but not cooked) egg
whites. Apparently, this is a common allergy.

The problem is that most vaccines are manufactured by "infecting" fertilized
chicken eggs with the virus and allowing it to incubate for up to several
months. The virus takes over the egg's nucleus (eggs are, after all, nothing
more than a giant single cell) and replicates like mad. After the incubation,
the eggs are opened and what remains of the whites is dilluted to make the
vaccine.

Check with your doctor. If it is the allergy, you run risks taking almost any
vaccine (not all vaccines use this method, but it is a common one.) It might be
possible to get a vaccine made by different methods, although I would expect
them to be very expensive. Still, if you have a legitimate allergy, your
insurance company might be willign to pay for alternate vaccines.

Chuck,

That is a very sobering statement. And, yes, I get the flu shot. (This
year's hurt like the dickens!)

My dad's sister died from the flu, no flu shots then also.

This year was the first year the shot didn't hurt at all. When I got my
shot, the nurse commented on how much muscle I had (I'd been weightlifting
for a couple months). I'm wondering if the extra muscle helps with the
pain.

I'm not saying i'd never get a flu jab, and if there was an epidemic going
around i'd take the vaccine. What i do detest is people who reach for the
bottle at the first sign of even a sniffle. I'm not denying that we all need
help from time to time, but that help for me at least is only sought when i
know i have no other choice and all natural defences have failed me. People
who raid my 1st aid box are constantly surprised by the total lack of
aspriin, painkillers or lemsips. All i keep are sterilising agents, plasters
and dressings with the odd salve of burn cream. Even things like diocalm,(
for sealing a leaky bum shut) are frowned on.
