Anyone have a clue, perhaps?
Last year I got my flu shot in Calfornia around Oct-02, we moved
to Ohio in Jan-03. Anyone know if there are different flu shots for
different regions of the US? I woke up last night about 1am sneezing
and a nice head cold. bG's bouncing all over God's creation, from 40
to 415.. pretty ketones. Yes, I'm bolusing corrections for it, drank
enough water I'm sloshing. I had bfast.. Tea and Toast, that didn't
settle well but didn't come up either. My body's achey.. It's been about
3-4yrs since I had my last flu.. 6month before my dx.
Wondering if my flu shot is no good on this end of the US.

There are different flu shots in different years. But I think this would
be awfully early for flu, anywhere in the country.
There are other kinds of viral infections. If you don't start feeling
better, call your doctor, if not today, first thing tomorrow morning.

From what I remember after seeing a segment on the news about this, they
determine what they think will be the most prevalent strain of the flu and
this is what they concoct the shot for. Of course there are many different
types of flu and you may get more than one of them.
I've made cross country moves several times and it seems that I've been
susceptible to different things in different parts of the country. I've
been particularly ill this year with respiratory things, probably due to
allergies. I live in a national park and everyone here seems to have bad
allergies.

Reisa I believe it is one flu shot fits all, I remember when the swine
flu was big, I was scheduled for a flu shot and I was next on line when
the announcement came that they were stopping the shot all over the
country due to terrible problems with it.

Flu is caused by a virus, but there is more than one strain.
Additionally, the viruses are capable of mutation, so it's as if new
ones keep turning up. The common cold virus does this so well, that
it is very difficult to produce a vaccine that can keep up with it.
OK. Influenza is usually much more dangerous, health wise, than
the common cold, as a rule, so the vaccine producers concentrate on
it, and try to keep up with new strains as fast as they can. That's
why it is recommended that people at high risk of being susceptible
to not over coming a flu virus easily, be vaccinated every year,
before the "flu season" arrives. Such persons are the very young,
the elderly, people with diabetes, and any others with impared
immune systems.
It is also recommended that one be vaccinated against pneumonia as
well, as this is one of the most life threatening secondary
complications of colds and flu. Since pneumonia does not mutate
often, once every 5 years (some say 10 yrs if you are under 60) is
usually sufficient.
One more tit bit on this subject. From what I understand, the
recent SARS infection turned out to be a mutation of the common cold
virus. Because there are thousands of possible viruses to
investigate, this was just about one of the least likely viruses
suspected, and it took some time to identify it. A suitable vaccine
is not expected to be available for quite some time.
As for your recent bout, it could be from a variety of reasons. It
may not be a flu virus, but a rather nasty cold. It could be from
an "old" virus that was not vaccinated for in the preceding years
when you didn't have an annual shot. It may be a new strain, for
which a vaccine has not yet been developed. Or it might even be one
that is not included in the mix commonly devised. Not all possible
flu's are in there.
One of the advantages of living "down under", is that we follow your
winter season, and any particularly nasty new ones are included by
the time we get our batch of vaccine.
There is still always the possibilty of catching something that you
haven't been vaccinated for, life is a risk, despite all that modern
medicine can do. All anyone can do is try to lessen the odds.
