Falling off the wagon...
Posted by Frank White

Ever since I was diagnosed back in April (and found
this newsgroup so I knew what I was doing), I have
walked the straight and narrow, so to speak. Eating
to my meter, watching my diet, etc, etc.

But today...

Today, for the first time in months, I baked bread.
And when the loaves came out of the oven, I couldn't
resist: I cut off a great big hank of steaming hot
bread, slathered on the butter, and chowed down.

Several times.

I also baked some cowboy cookies for an office party.
And treated myself to a couple of hot cookies and milk.

Three hours after this carb fest (I didn't have the
courage to test sooner), my BG was at 123... Down
from I don't know how high...

Alas!, poor beta cells. I knew you well.

Still, part of life is enjoying it.

Tomorrow it's back to a normal diet.

Hi Frank
We're all allowed "guilt free days" or we'd go nuts.
Incidentallly, was this the same day as the halloween snickers
bars?????
Now, two guilt free days in a row may be stretching things :-)
Five years ago, what you just described was a light snack, not worth
considering; amazing how fear of disablement or death can change your
thinking.

C'ext la vie! You are back to you normal way of eating now. That is how
you look at the way you eat now, isn't it? The bread and cookies was a "not
normal" way of eating.

You have become a human being and you did a human thing, Some things
are just too hard to resist especially those foods which are our
poisons.

Forget about it and keep on going.

And it tasted sooooo goooood! Sometimes you have to let go of the "normal"
way of eating and simply enjoy.
My best to you.
Steph (who occasionally not only falls off of that wagon, but watches it go
down the path without me)

it's because you were doing so well that you were able to have such a

It is okay to indulge every now and then.

<snip>

No, that was Saturday. The bread baking was Sunday. It
was an active couple of days.

Actually I've determined that I can eat small amounts of
chocolate without affecting my BG. Although it does slow
down my efforts to lose weight.

Now, wolfing down SEVERAL chocolate bars, even if they're
minis, MIGHT have been a bit excessive... ^_^

Boy, no kidding! ^_~

Hm. I hadn't thought of it before, but that's true. My
defination of normal has changed markedly in a very
short length of time.

Diabetes is a powerful incentive towards rethinking
your norms.

Alas. I've always been human. Despite accusations to
the contrary from certain family members...

Naw, I'm not upset. I'm just wryly reporting on some of
my foibles. Things are back to normal, now; and as long
as the chocolate bars and cookies stay out of sight, and
the bread isn't fresh from the oven, I have no problems.

Yes, sometimes reframing our thoughts can do wonders for how we handle
change. What is normal and everyday for me now was the "impossible dream" a
few years ago. The changes have all been for the better for me.
