Darn chest infection
Posted by Nigel Kendrick

Caught 'flu about 3 weeks ago and developed a chest infection. Started off
with Amoxycillin which sort of helped, but didn't clear things up 100%,
moved onto Erythromycin last week when I developed bronchitis! Just started
10 days of Cefalexin - what's next, Domestos!

Dunno about you but I find that the almost mandatory 7-days worth of
antibiotics that's dished out doesn't quite 'do it' any more (does bacteria
work on a 7-day week calendar anyway!?) so hopefully the 10 days supply will
help.

Ah well, at least I can work from home!

Yours, cough, splutter

I don't think it is the 7-day thing as such, it's the "complete the
course even if you feel better" thing that is the case with antibiotics.
It is likely that the antibiotics would have done their trick in e.g. 5
days time but you take the entire course to make sure theres none of the
bacteria left. It's taking half the course then the infection
surviving the onslaught from the antibiotic that causes, in part,
bacterial resistance to antibiotics.

I had a similar problem with infected leg ulcers brought on from
necrobiosis. Had a week's worth of Cefalexin which got halfway to sorting
it out, had to wait a further week and then got about 10 days worth of
Amoxycillin. At the end of that it still looked infected, but managed to
clear itself up - partly because of the increased BG control at the time I
think. I suspect there is still a lot of guesswork in finding the right
tool for the job - and the right dosage.

Look on the bright side - when your chest infection is gone, you'll have no
more probs with it. I killed the infection in my leg in November but the
holes in my leg are still healing

Ah well, at least I can still get my g/f to part with her breakfast by
flashing my leg....

In my case it was 'finished the antibiotics - still not all cleared up'.

I always need a 2 week course of antibiotics, without a
break between, for chest infections. My doc now prescribes
a refill at my request as he used to only prescribe one
course at a time. You may also need to test for pneumonia,
you could be needing a specific antibiotic to work on your
infection - blood and sputum tests.
