- Changes at my grocery store
- Posted by Julie Bove
I am pleased to see that my local grocery store is continuing to clean up
their act. The milk coolers are now actually keeping the milk cold and they
are no longer overfilled. Fruit flies are at a minimum and you can now take
your cart to your car to unload the groceries!
No healthy food section though. But what I did see were these blasted "low
carb" signs everywhere! I was greeted with a big banner in the window
stating "We now have low carb foods!" As if they had no low carb foods
before. Someone actually went all around the store pasting up little signs
to alert us to these foods. They were on the mustard, the salsa, the
chicken broth. Like we were too stupid to figure this out on our own! They
had an end cap full of some brand I'd never heard of with all sorts of
things stating "low carb" on the label. I passed those by and nearly ran
into a display of Atkins low carb whole wheat bread with only 4 effective
carbs per slice. That scared me!
Where did our real food go? It seems to be harder and harder to find plain
old fashioned food. So many of the fruits and vegetables have had the life
bread out of them so they'll have a longer shelf life. They haven't much
taste. I do kind of like the bagged salads, but they're getting fancier and
fancier, adding croutons, dressing and things I don't necessarily want.
Everything seems to be flavored like something it's not, or it has some kind
of freaky additives in it. This is true even at the health food stores. I
don't want ginseng in my popcorn or St. John's Wort in my chips.
Yikes! I am starting to sound like an old codger and I'm only in my 40's!
Makes me wish I could move to a farm. Hehe.

I've always wondered how if something does not have a ton of preservatives
added, it can be more expensive.

It's shelf life is shorter so it's not as high profit. The longer a product
can stay on a shelf without spoilage, the more likely to sell out.

I figure it is for the same reason that seltzer water, which is nothing more
than carbonated water, costs more than flavored and sweetened soda pop. In some
cases caffeine free colas cost more than those with caffeine even though the
caffeine had to be added to the regular ones. The same reason that unleaded
gasoline cost more than leaded gasoline for so long, even though the lead had to
be added to the gas. The last time we wanted to buy a three pound free range
chicken it was priced at over ten dollars compared to less than three dollars
for a supermarket fryer.
It's a conspiracy by big business to get as much money out of us as possible.
(Well, it could happen.)
How are you feeling, Budd?

Nutritional labeling has been both a blessing and a curse-- things
that wouldn't be considered low carb before, now have labels crowing
about it because they've added umpteen more "servings" to the
criteria. Who knew there were had 2.5 servings to a little can of

This "effective carbs" thing... I've gotta read up on that...
So that's it. I bought a container of cherry tomatoes that had the
consistency of rubber balls, and about as much flavor. And I love
cherry tomatoes, or used to... Fruit this year has been so
disappointing I don't even feel deprived by not being able to indulge
as much as I used to. Tasteless, hard peaches and nectarines, mushy
apples... ugh.
That's the excuse to add $1 per package to a few ounces of greens--
throw in a fast food sized packet of dressing, and some stale bread,
lol! I use the packaged salads occasionally for convenience, but
whatever they treat the vegetables with to stay crisp and prevent
browning makes them taste a tad weird.
I know the feeling. I guess that makes me a codger too

Maybe because they know it is going to spoil faster and they'll have to
throw out more of it? I dunno.

Sound like the "lowfat" fad of the 90's. Remember they were advertising
fruits and vegetables as lowfat and low cholesterol? The more things
change, the more they stay the same!

Yeah! I remember being able to get a glass of soda water in a restaurant
for a penny or two. Of course, I was a kid then and didn't like the stuff.

It costs more than that here, unless it is on sale. And even then, it's
only the store brand I can get that cheap. The canned kind costs more
still. And I do think seltzer is more popular here than it is in other
parts of the country. I remember looking high and low for it in CA, only to
find it on the aisle with the liquor. It was expensive and they had very
little of it.

We don't have any of those here, that I know of. I've been to a few in PA,
although I can never find everything on my shopping list in those places and
always have to go to another store in addition.

Yeah! I remember buying some locally made (WA) cheese that said it was low
fat. I didn't believe it because the taste and texture was too good to be
low fat. Then one day, it disappeared from the shelves only to be replaced
with some cheese that had weird stuff in it like herbs and tomatoes.
Supposedly the same kind of cheese. And yet, it had the same yucky texture
I've grown to hate with low fat cheese.
I remember those horrible Entenmanns's cakes and pastries that were lowfat.
I've seen countless people eat the entire thing, 12 servings or so and smile
because they were eating something low fat. I have tried those things a few
times and to me they were really nasty!
I also remember the oat bran kick. Suddenly oat bran was in everything.
And then they discovered that oat bran might not actually do anything for
you, and then people couldn't give that stuff away.

What we buy, Mendota Springs, is $2.99/12 pack of cans when on sale. Coke is
four or five 12 packs for $10.00. Canada Dry is usually $3.99 per 12 pack.
We never buy the large bottles. Loses its fizz before it is gone.

That is one advantage of us liking it. The grand kids only want the sugary
drinks so they get the Koolaid or regular pop and leave our seltzer alone.

I think you hit the nail on the head, friend. Their mantra is ,"PROFIT,
PROFIT, PROFIT."
I'm almost off all pain medication except for 400mg of Ibuprofen for my
arthritis twice a day, back on the aspirin for the ticker and no narcotics.
YEA!!!!
The surgeon had me on 1 tablespoon of mineral oil laxative twice a day, but
rather than have a dipstick installed, I've weaned myself off of it. It
wasn't too bad, I added it to Italian or oil and vinegar dressings on a
garden salad or, since I mash them up for breakfast, I'd mix it in with my
over easy eggs. It didn't help the flavor of either food, but did make the
oil a lot more tolerable.
Overall, I feel great. I was given back an old Pent 1 PC and I built a new
desk for it with the monitor lowered at an angle into the desk so I can see
the screen better with my bifocals. I plan to use it on the internet since I
really don't surf much, just a few newsgroups and emails, mostly, and my son
will take the Gateway and use it for 3-D animation work.
We went for a walk last night, my first in 9 months. Didn't go far, but it
felt so great. Can I be back to cycling next spring?

That is all fantastic, Budd. Happy to hear you are off the mineral oil. That
stuff can leak out at the most inopportune times. ( Like it did for me when I
had on a white lab uniform the day after a G.I. x-ray. )
Happy also to know you are off most of the meds. We are walking half a mile to a
mile three times per week. Hope to gradually get back up to two miles in under a
half hour, like we used to. We need to establish the routine now before it turns
cold and snowy. I s'pose we'll drive out to the mall then. It just seems like
such a waste, but I would imagine the payoff is worth it.
Keep on keepin' on.
