- Beer and gluten
- Posted by Charlie Owens
Hi everyone,
I don't post much. I am a T-1 diabetic who also has celiac disease(CD) and
a couple of other auto-immune diseases. Beer is assumed to be made from
wheat. I called up the Anheuser-Busch company to plead with them to make a
gluten free (g/f) beer after they came out with Michelob Ultra and told them
that according to the Celiac Sprue Association we can only drink wine, rum,
tequila and vodka made from potatoes. The spokesman said, "our beer is
gluten free, it is made from rice and the barley that is used in the process
is turned into amino acids during the brewing process and our scientists
have been unable to detect any gluten.(barley has a protein called, hordein)
The protein in wheat, rye, barley and oats destroys the villi in the small
intestine and that is how I got diagnosed with CD.
Since we are told to call companies about gluten content I am taking their
word for this but would like feedback from doctors or dieticians. I have
been drinking it without problems and told my GI doctor at the VA and he
thought it was great. Budweiser's number is 1-800-342-5283 if anyone wants
to check this story. I hope this isn't considered to be spam, I am just
excited that I can drink an occasional beer now.

Most beers are brewed without wheat, barley being the main

is that, "you can't drink beer". I like your idea of homebrew, there are
websites that explain the whole process of g/f beer from buckwheat. Till
this year, the last beer for me was in 1996.
Wine is OK
but I'm not crazy about mixed drinks. After I paid about 25.00 for a bottle
of potato vodka I find out that almost all of Smirnoffs vodkas are made from
corn. And you can get that anywhere.

Tim, It is so hot here in SC most of the year I have never tried
getting all the gluten free ingredients together to make
homebrew. Now I won't have to.
