Aspirin
Posted by Charlie Owens

A recent post about aspirin reminded me of a conversation I had with my
doctor yesterday. She asked me if I was still taking aspirin and scheduled
me for another nuclear stress in January and upped my blood pressure
medicine. I have a slight blockage and she insists on me taking aspirin
although I bleed at the slightest scratch to my arms and had quit taking it
for that reason.

What I wanted to point out is that we older folks get ripped off on things
like children's aspirin. I bought a bottle of 100 Bayer's adult aspirin for
about a dollar or less. My doctor gave me a pill splitter as she prescribes
several medications that have to be split. When you split a 325 mg tablet 4
ways that is a perfect 81 mg children's aspirin. You all know what these
"low dose" aspirins cost. (drug stores are higher) Now I have a 400 days
supply.

You can also buy the store brand. I get the store brand at Walmart. I
can't remember what I pay for them, but I do know that they are a lot lower
than the national brand. I'm a klutz and hope I never have to split pills
for myself. When I've split pills for our dogs, I pulverize the pills.

Not a good idea for those who should be taking enteric coated aspirin!

That's what I take when I fly (to prevent dvt). I can't take normal

passed out of the stomach. Works for me.

The cost of adult low strength aspirin (81mg) are so cheap,
I can't imagine anyone going to the trouble to do this.
WalMart or SaveOn have these store brand aspirin in 300
count packages for a few dollars. The cost would certainly
be less than 3 cents a day.

I get my enteric 81mg at Costco (no this is not an ad)... the Kirkland
store brand.

I get a year's supply for about 7 dollars.

Better the pills than the dogs.
I have two, but since they got fat (I guess they really DO look like their master ;-) I don't
have to split tabs anymore.

One junior aspirin is ok, but large doses are contraindicated with insulin
or glucose-reducing tablets. Possible hypos you see.

Funny, my GP said that when I asked about using aspirin as an anti-
coagulant: no more than 75 mg. He didn't connect it with diabetes though.

Stick around a bit, some of us here were dxed decades ago, you might learn,
but with you inherent arrogance you might not. I remember you claiming on
upsd that dm can cause immediate organ failure. Oh no, it is takes 20+ years
to do it slowly and painfully. Paracetamol used correctly takes at least
that long to cause liver failure.

Many diabetologists prescribe 75mg aspirin per day as a matter of course
since stroke is major danger for T2s.

A great many suicides are caused by overdosing on paracetamol. The sad
bit is that death is not immediate, but if not treated within a few
hours, the liver damage is irreversible, so the patient dies slowly
over the next few days even though they might have had a change of
heart about killing themselves. Many suicide attempts are in reality a
cry for help, not a genuine desire to end it all. At one time it was
suggested that all paracetamol tablets have the antidote incorporated
into them, so that the more tablets you took, the more antidote you
got, and the whole thing was self neutralising, but nothing ever
happened and the suicides continue.

I had a relative who had a very close shave overdosing with
paracetamol.
