Antibiotics raise BG?
Posted by Eddie Type 2

Hi all,

A few days ago, I posted that I was having high morning FBG's but that I
also had a cough. Several people responded by saying that the cough
infection could also raise my BG levels.

My cough has been getting worse and yesterday I went to the doctor and he
started me on antibiotics for the cough.

I went to bed last night with a BG level of only 5.4. Before bedtime, I
took a dose of the antibiotics. I awoke this morning to my highest reading
in 4 months! It was 9.3 (167) !!!.........I took another dose of the
antibiotics this morning, then took my meds and then ate breaky. Normally
after 2 hours I am at about 6.7(121), but today I am still at 7.7(139) which
has me a little concerned!

I ate what I normally eat for breaky, so I know it is not the food that is
affecting my BG...........It must be the infection or the antibiotics!

Can anyone please comment.

It is probably the infection. Sometimes even cutting carbs won't help. You
may just have to ride it out for a few days. Don't stop the anti-biotics.
Although, if it's a virus you've contracted, they are of no use.
Anti-biotics work against bacteria not viruses.

The antibiotics I just finished taking did have something in the prescribing
information that they could cause loss of glycemic control for diabetics,
adding that we needed to test our BG more often while taking them. And
indeed, my numbers were wacky for the entire time I was taking them. I saw
a few high numbers, but also some low ones. You don't say what kind of
antibiotics you are taking. So I have no clue if this is related. More
likely, the infection you are fighting is the cause of the high BG.

Eddie,
I have elevated bg's from antibodics, the one that was the worse (for
me) was Keflex. Are you using a sugar free/carb free cough medicine?
Any of these things can cause some whacky bg's...including the infection
itself....Hope ya feel better fast...TAke care....Mic

Always, be, and stay AWARE!

My doctor said not to worry unless my bgs start going over 11 or
12........(198 or 216)...........if they do that, then he said to call or go
to the hospital........so far so good.........my 9.3 was the highest and
this morning I am back down to "my normal" of 8.2 (148)

Hi Micki.......I checked with the Pharmacist and he gave me a cough medicine
that doesn't contain sugar.........

I think I am over the hump with this thing now?.............It's been at
least 5 years since I've had a cold or anything.........not pleasant at all!

I guess I should have asked the pharmacist........he usually tells me if
there will be any effect, so I just assumed that there wouldn't
be.........hence, you must be right in saying that it may just be the
infection doing this to my bgs

That is a doctor I would get rid of very very quickly! My own med team,
without exception (DSN, GP, podiatrist, opthalmogist, dietician, and
diabetologist) state *No diabetic should ever at any time for any reason go
above 8mmo/l (144mg/dl)*.

Whether or not you agree with that, whether or not you can achieve it, is a
different matter. Well, 2 different matters, I suppose ;-)

As you are t2, adjusting meds is not so easy as simply injecting a bit more
or a bit less insulin. And since you got an infection it won't be easy to
exercise. Which leaves simply, eat a bit less, but don't starve. Or, for a
few days, don't worry about the high number, they are not desirable, but a
week or ten days of hyperglycemia won't kill you. Always providing you
survive the infection lol

Sorry, it's called gallows humour.

Hi there Eddie,

Sometimes when I am prescribed a med that I know little about, I do
a search on the web (I use Google), and enter a search criterea
consisting of the generic name of the med, plus the words "adverse
reactions" or sometimes "contra-indications". Sometimes "diabetes"
finds what I am looking for. Or "blood glucose".

You may find something that way about your anti-biotic and it's
possible effect on blood sugar. The generic name for your med
should be somewhere on the label on the container.

Worth a try.

Annette
