'92 Chevy Lumina minivan jerks at 55 MPH
Posted by Kevin

Hello:

My 1992 Chevy Lumina minivan shakes (jerks) when it reaches the 55 MPH
range. If I let up on the gas, the jerking stops. I just recently
had the tires balanced and rotated and had new serpentine belt
installed. I thought maybe the balancing might help fix the problem,
but it didn't. Any suggestions as to what might be causing the
problem? The van has 124,000 miles on it.

Thanks for your help,
Kevin Gravelle

Can you describe the "jerking" a little more .. any noises associated with
it? What happens when you push more on the gas pedal, do you feel a
vibration in the steering wheel?

More info needed.

Thanks for your reply. There's is a small noise associated with the
jerking; maybe a light "woant woant woant" (like something might be
rubbing together) but that's about it. I don't feel any vibration in
the steering wheel while the car is jerking (even when I accelerate).
The weird thing is if I push on the pedal harder, it seems to bypass
the jerking and goes into another acceleration level which is smooth.
It seems like there's something wrong with the "level" of acceleration
that is used most typically that is causing the jerking.

Thanks,
Kevin

Ok, I need a little better idea what "jerking" means. Do you feel some
motion from the car that could be described as up and down, a vibration? ..
or is it more like the car is hesitating, like a forward and back sensation?
Is the jerking directly tied in with the noise that you hear? Level of
acceleration .. you mean if you floor it and go right past 55, you hardly
feel the jerk?

Usually a vibration or sensation like that is associated with tires that are
out of balance. If not that then it could be an issue with a bad tire, or
wheel alignment. Last case and worst case is you could have a motor or
transmission mount that is broken, or a drive train bearing or CV joint
going bad. Lots of possibilities, need more analysis.

The jerking could be described as a forward and back sensation. Yes,
the jerking is tied directly to the noise. If I "pedal" it when I
start feeling the jerk and hearing the noise, the jerking and noise
stops (because it goes to a higher acceleration level).

I actually took the van into CarX, and after they looked at it for
awhile, they determined that the transmission is going bad, especially
the overdrive. When I picked up my van this morning, the mechanic
mentioned that there might be something else causing the problem which
will be A LOT cheaper than replacing the transmission. I think he
mentioned something about a transmission mount, but I could be wrong.

Does this information help?

I confirmed with the auto mechanic and he said that the problem might
be due to a bad "torque converter clutch solenoid." Does this sound
like a possibility? Thanks for your replies.

Other than the noise and jerk at 55 ... everything else works fine in all
conditions and speeds? Uphill or down? I wouldn't think that the only
problem would be the clutching of the torque converter .. you would notice
this problem at many different speeds etc. .. under various different
conditins .. usually the torque converter will lock and unlock frequently
and you would never know ...

I would lean more toward the transmission mounts or a bad driveshaft carrier
bearing if you have one .. do you get the same effect if the transmission is
out of overdrive at 55? If so, this would more likely be caused by the
mount rather than internal transmission probs. Or maybe it could be the
transmission popping in and out of overdrive at 55, which would mean you
have transmixer problems .. like low fluid or way dirty ATF or plugged
filter or the tranny is dying.
