Dietary vitamin E reduces labile iron
Posted on 11-19-2005 | 1 Comments

Dietary vitamin E reduces labile iron in rat tissues. Ibrahim W, Chow CK J Biochem Mol Toxicol. 2005 Nov 16; 19(5): 298-303 Previous studies have shown that dietary vitamin E reduced generation and/or levels of superoxide. As superoxide has potential to release iron from its transport and storage proteins, and labile or available form of iron is capable of catalyzing the formation of reactive hydroxyl radicals, the effect of dietary vitamin E on labile iron pool was studied in rats....

Supplement Brand Comparison/Input Needed
Posted on 11-09-2005 | 1 Comments

I am looking forward to the results from National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) "Glucosamine/Chondroitin Arthritis Intervention Trial (GAIT)" study and have decided to give these supplements a try. One thing I am finding hard is determine if there is really a difference betweens supplement brands. Also if it is better to take pills, capsules, powders or if it...

Cartilage regeneration paradox
Posted on 11-07-2005 | 1 Comments

I was doing a little bit of reading about osteoarthritis that leaves me confused about what seems like it must be the central issue of the disease. On one hand, all conventional wisdom seems to agree that cartilage virtually "doesn't heal", and that osteoarthritis results from a cumulative "wearing away" of joints over a lifetime. Yet it is also acknowledged that different individuals with the same life-style have wildly differing degrees of osteoarthritis, which seems strange for a solely...

Iron / chronic joint disease?
Posted on 10-19-2005 | 8 Comments

Iron - the bad guy in haemophilic chronic joint disease? 04 Apr 2005 Mutations in the HFE gene, which is involved in iron regulation, seem to be directly associated with chronic joint disease (or haemophilic arthropathy) among haemophilic patients, claim a team of Portuguese scientists in the April issue of the journal Blood. The results, from a small group of hemophilic patients, if confirmed in a larger population, could have important implications, not only for the treatment of haemophilic...

If You Think You'll Feel Better, You Will
Posted on 10-17-2005 | 6 Comments

Steven Reinberg, "If You Think You'll Feel Better, You Will", Health Day, August 24, 2005, Pain relief may just be mind over matter. According to new research, the belief that a pill will relieve pain is enough to cause the brain to release its own natural painkillers. The finding is the first direct evidence that the brain's own pain-fighting chemicals, endorphins, have a role in the phenomenon

Went to the docs with ever increasing pain all over my body, (symetrical), expected him to say it was Osteo arthritis, just like my moms got, but after the blood tests come back he says its Rheumatoid. He didnt say much at all about it, just that he would make me an appointment to see a rheumatologist, and in the meanwhile to take painkillers when needed. I have to wait another 3 weeks before I can see the rheumatologist. I do not have too...

Freestyle Glucose Meter: Approximate Error Correction?
Posted on 10-12-2005 | 1 Comments

My husband just noticed that he's gone through about 20 strips with his Freestyle blood glucose monitor code set to 17 when it should have been set to 12. He's not expecting to correct those readings with any precision, but does anyone know at least what direction the correction would go in, and better yet a back of the envelope algorithm for a reasonable guess? thanks, --thelma
