Ohio Court Certifies Class in OxyContin Suit
Monday, July 14, 2003
New York (Reuters) - An Ohio appeals court has affirmed
certification of a class-action lawsuit on behalf of
thousands of Ohio residents who allege they were injured
by the highly addictive narcotic painkiller OxyContin,
lawyers for the plaintiffs said on Monday.
Privately held Purdue Pharma and Abbott Laboratories
Inc., which sold and distributed the drug, were named as
defendants in the case.
"The Court of Appeals clearly found that the plaintiffs
have provided evidence that OxyContin has ruined lives,"
Stanley Chesley, one of the lead attorneys for the class,
said in a statement.
Attorneys for the plaintiffs contend that Abbott and
Purdue Pharma marketed the morphine-like drug as a simple
pain medication rather than as "a dangerous narcotic,
even more dangerous than heroin."
[...]
More than 100 people across the country have died from
the narcotic, according to the federal Drug Enforcement
Administration.

Ahh, did you pick Ohio for the heck of it?
How much search did you have to do to find a article dealing with
Ohio, and oxycontin?

You know, I apologize. I jumped the gun, and said that out of
feelings. You will have to get a script by a doc to get the
oxycontin. You can cross the border over to Canada, and get the meds
though, its pricey. I don't do that, I know of some that do. Crossing
the border over to Candada is a six hour drive for me. It has crossed
my mind at times. At times when I am depressed, and have lost hope.
It passes, them thoughts. For some it don't.
Sometimes you have to go to doc after doc, in order to get the relief
and understanding that you need. Yes, there are a few bad apples that
ruin things for the rest of us. So, goes life. Getting better may
mean making life changes, and you know I understand at this time in
your understanding of things, saying this don't mean a whole lot, when
you are dealing with pain.
I know from message boards in other places that there are good docs
out there, here in the US that do prescribe the needed meds.
Sometimes along with the prescribing, other things may go along with
it that you may not like, or want to do. Like things that will help
you to feel better. Physical therapy, diet changes, exercise. Being
monitored while in treatment.
I feel though if you do these things, and there is no improvement, or
if you are physically unable to do things to improve your feeling and
getting a little better, then yes you should be prescribed these meds,
like oxycontin, percocet.
By prescribing them, it helps ease the pain, in order to function,
make decisions, do things that will help you feel better. Enjoy life
just a little, you know?
I feel for you, as I do for any others in Chronic Pain. I really
honestly do. I know how it is.
My thoughts are with you.

I believe that all docs are, and these types of class action lawsuits are
making things worse.

Thanks, very nice reply.
My doc will give me very limitted pain meds, and right now I'm just able to
get by each day and hold down a job. I'm just angry about these types of
lawsuits, because I worry that they put indirect pressure on our docs to
stop prescribing pain meds for fear of such lawsuits.

I see the fear in docs allready of prescribing meds to people with
chronic pain. Unfortuanately like I said, it sucks that a few bad
apples got to mess it up, make it harder for people who really need
the meds. I am with ya.

Jai, I wasn't asking for recommendations for my case, I was responding to a
remark you made, implying that there were better countries than the U.S. for
the treatment of chronic pain.
