Green tea is made from the leaves of the plant Camellia Sinensis. The
most important and active ingredients in green tea are polyphenols,
particularly the catechin called epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG).
Polyphenols are the substances, according to research, responsible for
its health-related benefits.
In a study, men taking green tea extract 3 times a day burned 266 more
calories a day than the placebo group, thus leading to the conclusion
that green tea may help fight obesity.
Research has shown that green tea protects against cardiovascular
disease, by reducing platelet aggregation (clumping of blood cells
that can lead to heart disease), and by preventing the oxidation of
LDL cholesterol, thereby decreasing plaque formation.
The polyphenols in green tea have also been associated with reduced
risk of several types of cancer in humans, e.g., leukoplakia (a
pre-cancerous oral condition), prostate cancer (Japanese men and
Chinese men who drink 4 to 6 cups of green tea daily have
significantly lower mortality rates from this type of cancer), as well
as lung, esophagea and stomach cancers.
A recent study published in a prestigious dental magazine reported
that green tea stops an enzyme from breaking down cartilage while
reducing inflammation in joints. Together with other studies it
suggests that a polyphenolic fraction from green tea that is rich in
antioxidants may be useful in the prevention of the onset and severity
of arthritis.
