- Hello Everyone!

I have a question or two, I was on Vioxx, excellent for the pain, but
likely to kill you, Celebrex, not as good as relieving the pain, but off the
market, Bextra didn't work at all for me.
So now according to my physician, I have two choices, Naxopren, 500mgs twice
a day, or Ibuprofen, 800 mgs 3 times a day, I found out that Ibuprofen helps
me more, with only two per day...
But my question is which one of the two is safer, if taking for a long time,
I have severe osteoarthritis in both hips.
Thank you.
Kiki.

best for me with any kind of pain. It can eat holes in your insides for some
people but not for me. My family doctor had me on 3 500mg prescription
naprosyn for 6 years before he threw up his hands and sent me to a
Rheumatologist with pain in my shoulders and feet, knees,,, ect. That was
the best thing he could of done. I started treatment for RA on the first
visit which was gold shots back then.
Please do not drink alcohol with either one. Good luck with it and I
hope you have seen an RD.

Thank you Harv,
I have switched back to Ibuprofen, Naproxen was really hurting my
stomach.
No I have not see a RA yet, just my regular Doc.
I just sign up for this group, I like it better,
Take care.

see if you can prevent the damage from even starting. My RD put me on
Arthrotec 75, 75 mg twice a day, but she also said to continue with my
Nexium and Gaviscon. I feel that Celebrex gave me a couple of
beginning ulcers as I had no problems on Bextra. It worked, but not
as well as the Arthrotec 75 does. Celebrex was a bust as far as I was
concerned, though it does work well for some people.

Naproxen gave me an ulcer in 13 days. Whoopee.
Ibuprofen didn't help the ulcer but I was able to get along with the help of
Tagamet and Zantac.
Gallows Humor: I played in seniors tennis tournaments before my arthritic
hips got too bad. We used to call the tournaments "The Ibuprofen Open"
because so many of us were using it.
I was able to use Arthrotec 75 for several years, despite the ulcer.
Arthrotec contains diclofenac which is a potent NSAID. It also contained a
second ingredient which increases mucus production in the stomach. Most
Cox 1 inhibitors such as aspirin, ibuprofen, etc, cause damage to the
stomach because they inhibit the production of stomach mucus. The two
ingredients in Arthrotec sorta balance each other as far as stomach mucus is
concerned.
Arthrotec is especially noteworthy because diclofenac is one of the few
NSAID which does not neutralize the anti-platelet agglomeration effect of
daily aspirin. Ibuprofen is noted for its ability to neutralize the
anti-platelet effect (i.e. the anti-heart attack effect) unless you take
the aspirin quite a while before the ibuprofen. Since the aspirin is
thought most useful if taken just before bed, the timing issues can get
difficult.
I now take Celebrex after a disastrous month when the ulcer started to
bleed. AFAIK, Celebrex is still on the market, I got a 3-month supply at
the beginning of August.

I have posted here before and had a lot of answers to my questions.
I have severe Osteoarthritis, have a good physician, I believe, I get injections of cortisone every 3 months on both hips due to inflammatory bursitis, the pain as all know is becoming unbearable, as for meds, I believe I try everything, was on Valtoren, after reading something that the risks of taking it were as bad as Vioxx used to be, I stopped.
Yesterday he gave a prescription for salsalate ( generic) 500mg , 2 twice a Day.
Please any feed back on that medication or any advice for another medication.
Thank you all.

Hi Ladybug,,,, Please see a Rheumatologist to make sure you do not have a form of inflam.arth. If you do,,,, it may be too late to save your hips. Those steroid shots (I have had over a dozen) do their own kind of damage in a persons joint while they help us to live with what we have.

Hello Harv,
I know what you mean about the shots, at first , at first I believed I had find the perfect miracle drug to relieve the pain, not anymore
To answer your question I have been to a RA, who told me I didn't have Inflam.arth, so really I do not know what to do, and will resume talking Voltaren, risks or not, I like to be pain free for just one Day.
Thank you Harv.

Harv and Group,
Thank you for your answer, the support from strangers helps a lot, I have a question, well two, the shots that my RA gave me, after asking if it could caused some further damage, he told me no , because they were administered in the soft tissues.
Second, after asking for the length of recovery after hip replacement again he told me 3 months at the most.
Please keep the postings coming, its amazing how not only the pain is affecting my range of motion, my daily activities, but mostly, it puts me in a deep depression.
Thank you Friends.

Hello Ladybug!
Hope you are okay today. If you are a candidate for hip replacement,
this is your best solution to stop your pain for many years to come. I
had both my hips replaced over 9 years ago and do not have any pain at
all. It took over 6 months to recover completely as I had two hips done
(4 months apart). But the pain I had prior to the surgery was
absolutely unbearable. Even just after the surgery, the pain was more
bearable because they put you on pain medications and then you wean
yourself off eventually. With a good surgeon and Physical Therapist,
you will be back on your feet within a few months with no pain. It is
so worth having done!!
Hope this info helps.

Angela,
Thank you for your encouraging posting, I am really thinking about it, the
pain not only affect your body but also your mind, and there is no
medications helping.
I also need to have both hips replaced, and dream of days free of pain.
Take care, and thank you again.
