Has anyone tried the starch free diet ? If so had it helped with the
pain associated with AS?

Actually the "low carb diets" have been proven to work. The Atkins in
particulair. Great books out there explaining it. Also websites. I
have Fibromyalgia. Many friends online on other message boards.. Say
the same thing.. That the low carb diet works for them in losing
weight, eating more healthy, and the symptoms are eased up some. Been
recommended by friends the susanne sommers diet also works well.

I used to weigh around 125 a couple years ago before the diagnosis of
FM. Gained weight rapidly. Like my metabolism is out of whack.
Dropped caffeine and sugar loaded drinks, sugar in foods, junk food
period. Processed food too. I have seen such a big difference.

Then got to be ready in the head to stick to a diet. Got to admit
there is a problem, and want to make the changes.

Good luck!

Hey guys......I agree that there are usefull anti-inflammatory diets
out there that work. I have tried quiet a few, and have been very
active in seeking out what works for me and what doesn't....and I
think that is the key to it. You have to narrow your choices until you
find what works and what doesn't. My M.D., who is also trained in
natural therapies and diet recommend Ultra-Inflam X to me 4 years ago.
It is a food-based anti-inflammatory, which worked immediately and
radically for me. Much better than any of the traditional drugs, and
it doesn't have any side effects. I am on full disability with
advanced A.S., so I followed the diet that the company (Metagenics)
recommended, and experimented with adding and subtracting a food every
other day. I found that the foods that caused problems were citrus,
fruit drinks, coffee, alcohol, wheat, oats, corn barley rye and all
gluten containing products, pork, canned meats, hot dogs, and sausage,
peanut butter and peanuts and almost all dairy.....and all of the
nightshade family....(Potatoes, tomatoes, etc.) I also avoid all sugar
and honey products and pre-prepared foods.....and yes, Atkins works
well also.........
I have just started a therapy using fresh aloe vera juice and
freeze-dried powder), and have seen very good results with it...my
hips and arms have loosened up appreciably in the three weeks that I
have been doing it....not major, but enough that I really notice it
when I work out. Fresh Aloe apparently has a moderating effect on the
immune system, so that it reduces it if it's too high, and raises it
if it's too low........and I have read accounts of people with
rhumetoid arthritis who completely reversed the effects with
aloe......... And, I just heard about a product called Wobenzyme,
which is a product containing digestive enzymes used extensively in
Germany that is supposed to radically reduce inflammation.....and has
no side effects. You can read about it by a search on
Google...........

anyway, what all this means is that I have been able to maintain
pain-free days when I don't go off the diet and when I don't do
anything stupid with my spine......which is a great relief compared to
the days that it takes twenty minutes just to get out of bed. By the
way, if you wish to try the Ultra-Inflam X from Metagenics, it has to
be recommended by a physicial, naturopath, nurse, accupuncturist, or
chiropractor.........so, good luck all......Sandy
