Rotary vs. Foil Razors
Posted by Ken

I have noticed that most people with acne skin prefer the electric
razor to the non-electric. I have been using a Mach 3 and I think it
is contributing to my acne, every time I shave I break alot of pimples
open and I know that breaking them will just spread it more. I have
never used an electric before and was wondering what is less abrasive,
the foil or rotary electric shavers. I would imagine that the foil
would be better, but I have no idea. Also, does anyone have any
suggestions for a good brand? So far I have been looking at some of
the Braun foil shavers. Thanks in advance for any help.

I think this is another one of those "subjective" questions, every answer is
gonna be different, personally speaking (Im 36) , having some pretty major
stubble, theres nothing like a proper blade razor, I heard somewhere once
that it acts as an exfoliant and so is good for your skin, I dont know how
true that is but its certainly the most comfortable way to shave for me and
the easiest on my acne.
I should point out though that IMO , the razor is only half (if that) the
equation, what foam / gel you use is the other, I can use cheap tesco razors
with a decent gel with no cuts or soreness.
As for electric razors .. ewwwwwww it may be ok if you have a little bit
of bumfluff (lol) but if you have proper stubble then forget it.

Hope it helps, Barrie .

Razor for sure. Electric shavers just dont do a good enough job. Although
they're handy if you're on the run.

I've always wondered if the shaving cream can irritate your skin? Is there
any ingredient to stay away from? Might try the gel based ones next.

try using aveeno shave gel.. the one with oatmeal (its a beige colored
can).. gives me a really nice shave and is about one of the only gels/foams
that dont make me break out. imo, electric razors irritate my skin more so
then regular razors.

there are alot of variables here, but if you have soft, very oily skin
like mine you should try an electric. I have never found any combo of
prep/blade/creme etc that didn't produce bumps and ingrown whiskers. So I
shave lightly with an electric, which may mean shaving again in the PM if
I want to look well-groomed.

Most Target stores carry the Wahl brand, way cheaper than anything else
beside the flimsy Chinese things they have at Walgreen's (which can still
be useful but just don't cut through tough whiskers); the Wahls also have
inter-changeable screen sets so you can see which screen works best (but
they usually come with the closest shave setting). I'm probably an extreme
case, but I have to use a procedure where I wash with a Sal. acid cleanser
(or a BP one if I'm getting more symptomatic) dry thoroghly and then use
the Wahl on my outer jaw and the light-duty Chinese model on my cheeks (by
absolute necessity I can't shave at all close to my mouth and along the
chin, leaving a kind of modified goatee pattern) if I shave there, blade,
razor, whatever, the damn whiskers dig into edge of the follicle and it's
Big Trouble.

I haven't priced it out--it's expensive--but you can acutally get
electrolysis and knock out each follicle for good.

I also have to police areas of incipient infection with a variety of
topicals (i.e. keep the skin bugs from adapting to just one treatment)
either Clearasil sulfor-resorcinol cream, Neutrogena 2.5% BP cream, or
Nature's Cure 4% BP gel. (1st two are skin-toned) I have to cast my vote
on the side that argues the high-strength Benzoyl lotions and creams (like
10%) are over-kill and do more harm than good in the long run. Also,
moderate sun exposure definitely retards my tendency to develop pimples.

use an electric razor if you want that "bill gates" half shaven/patch growing
look.

the best razors are bump fighters made by pfb (originally designed for blacks).
these are single blade that leave the hair growing a bit so ingrown hairs do
not occur. use only once every other day. and use edge sensitive skin shaving
gel (purple color, has glycerin and vit e)

I use the Mach 3 but I only shave in the shower after my skin is
heated up good and softened (I have one of those shower mirrors). My
skin gets less irritated that way. I use Neutrogena shave cream which
is supposed to prevent razor bumps. I noticed that one of the
ingredients is pantothenic acid but I'm not sure that it does anything
in topical form.

no look at bill gates time and newsweek photos. The Bill Gates half shaven
look is much different from the Don Johnson stubble look. The Bill Gates look
is skin with patches completely bare with stubble in small patches,
intersperced with shaven skin.
