- Refined Sugars/Carbs
- Posted by Neil
I hope these questions do not sound dumb. I am going to try to eliminate
refined sugars/carbs. Problem is i don't know what foods fit these
catagories. I just started drinking hazlenut milk, it has more sugars
and carbs then cows/ almond/ soy milk. Are things like that refined
sugars? Are fruits refined sugars? What besides things like pasta and
pure sugar should i stay away from? I am not lookng to follow an atkns
type program, i just beleive it is commen sense to curb your carb
intake, and when taking carbs to take them at the right time, and the
right kinds.
Also i have stopped taking all my vitamins due to having difficulty
digesting them(IBS) NOW ALL I TAKE IS GLA/dha fatty acids. I hope i will
get enough vits from my diet
Any advice would be appreciated.

Low carb: protein (fish, chicken, eggs, beef, pork)
salad veggies, most green veggies
Cheese, nuts, seeds
For low carb (not vegetarian, obviously) eating, that stuff would makeup
the bulk of your food. Eat as much of proteins and vegetables as you
want, until you're full.
Medium carbs would be things like whole grains. The more fiber, the
better. They call it "effective carbs". That means you can subtract the
fiber from the carb count listed, because fiber is treated differently
in the digestive system than carbs, and fiber has negligable impact on
sugar levels.
So if you're not looking to go low carb, just lower carb, then choose
whole grains. Never ever white flour or white sugar. Nature's Own (in
grocery stores) makes a good low carb bread, or just go for high fiber
natural grain ones (if you love bread). Same with pasta, only buy whole
grain pastas. Try to limit these medium carbs to one per day. One (whole
grain) cereal or one whole grain bread or one whole grain pasta. Use
these grains sparingly, just as a complement to your protein/veggie meals.
Highest carbs are in potatoes (including sweet), corn, carrots, fruit,
fruit juices, and anything package (cookies, candy, chips, pretzels,
etc). A healthy diet is always "shopping the perimeter" or the outside
aisles of the grocery and not the inside junk/high preservative aisles.
Or at least focusing on filling up with the healthier stuff, and just
having a small bit of the refined stuff..
Basically, for each meal, think which protein do I want? Then add in the
veggies, then add in the other stuff in small portions.
Like have an omelet for breakfast,
fish and a salad for lunch
chicken and veggies for dinner
There are a lot of sugar-free low carb snacks out now, so maybe have
sugar free jello or low carb icecream or whatever for dessert..
snack on almonds or celery and cream cheese or peanut butter
Also, anything "low fat" version is going to be higher in carbs than the
full fat. They take fat out, but pump up carbs to make it taste better.
So heavy whipping cream has the lowest carbs. Skim milk has the highest
carb count. You can't really drink milk on low carb, but you can drink
cream.

Hey, have you tried calcium supplements for your IBS?

Hi Neil,
Kita gave you good food advice. I'm just chiming in with my particular
diet. If I stick to my diet, then my skin is clear.
I eat a diet high in fruit and veggies (raw) and very little grain. No
meat. I'm a vegetarian. I feel that eating fruit is essential to having
beautiful skin.
My IBS completely went away when I changed my diet. That means I gave up
all animal protein and grains. Prior to the diet change, I was having to
eat rice every day to keep my IBS symptoms at bay.
Take care and good luck.

Lunch . grilled turkey with salad, dressing (with olive oil and balsmac
vinager)
a fruit
Snack: a low carb/ high protien snack bar( like atkins)
Dinner: fish maybe a little barly(organic) maybe veggies, i have a tough
time digesting veggies.
Snack: 1 high protien/low carb shake, like Labrada or EAS with L
glutimene.
I drink lots of water during the day..I have lost alot of weight in the
last few years. I have terribly oily skin and lately bad acne, which

A typical day's menu for me:
Breakfast:
Either melon or a banana or two or fresh juice
I used to have fruit smoothies that were three pieces of fruit - no dairy

Another piece of fruit or more or more juice
Lunch:
Small salad with lettuce, tomato, maybe avocado
or small salad of lettuce and more fruit
Sometimes I'll have some toast with it.
Dinner:
Two salad wraps consisting of lettuce, tomato, cucumber, avo, scallion and a
wrap
or a very large salad
or some steamed veggies

You are so healthy compared to me. How do you get your protein, though?
Stuart
- Posted by Grant
Hi Stuart,
It is really difficult to NOT get enough protein as long as you are eating
enough calories. The amino acids to build complete proteins are in the
fruit and veggies. I don't think I can think of a disease that happens
because you are low on protein. But anyway, other people eat nuts and seeds
to get more protein if they need it. I make a delicious sunflower seed
dressing that would contain a lot of protein. However, nuts and seeds also
contain a lot of fat and so we usually don't eat too many of them.

This is what raw foodists eat. Fruits and vegetables are the most natural
of foods to eat. Anything that needs to be processed or cooked is NOT
natural and not meant for our body unless you are supplementing with it. I
get all the protein I need in the fruits and vegetables. If you get
headaches from not eating enough protein for breakfast then it is because
your system is out of balance somewhere else. The body runs on
carbohydrates. Carbs feed the brain and the body.

heh..could you be a little more specific? "your system is out of balance" is a very vague phrase. for
example..what "system" are we talking about? there's many "systems" in the body.
The body runs on
yeah i know. i'm not saying you shouldn't eat carbs or fruits for that matter. i'm just talking about eating
from all 4 groups, you know..a "balanced" diet..but i guess that doesn't work for you and you get pimples.

As far as all four food groups goes, I think of the groups as carbs, fat and
protein. As long as you get enough of the right food groups then you'll be
in good shape. Out of balance: lots of people need a lot of protein to
counter act the refined carbs that they are eating. Eliminate those carbs
and the need for the added protein goes away.

Ar,
I would starve if that's all I ate! No, I'd probably die. I only weigh 95
pounds as it is and am hypo like you. Most hypos aren't thin though. I thought
I was a lucky one until diagnosed with osteoporosis.
Dee

Oops, I forgot. I'd have a big, nasty yeast infection in a number of places in
my body if I ate all that fruit.
Dee

Hi Dee,
I know one other thin hypo. It seems like a blessing but hypo gets you
either way.
There are quite a few raw food body builders so you can bulk up and add
weight on this diet as well. It has to do with how many calories you eat.
For instance, most people eat one banana a day (if they eat bananas). Raw
fooders who are very active will eat more like 15 a day. I eat about three.
Take care,

Hi Dee,
Actually, you can get rid of your candida on a raw food diet. As long as
you don't mix fats with sugars, the candida can and will go away. Lots of
us get rid of our yeast on this diet. Some need extra help, though. They
do the three weeks without any fruit and eat only veggies. Then they add
the fruit back in.

Do you have a slow metabolism?
I'd be 80 pounds on that diet, it's probably not even 800 calories?
You mentioned nuts, aren't they not "raw" since they are roasted?
I was a vegan for a few years (but not raw foodist). But I really craved
cheese and chicken and just being able to eat yummy stuff when I went
out to eat. (I could make stuff at home that was good, but was mostly
limited to salads when I went out to eat.. which stinks when everyone
else is digging in on the cheese nachos at the Mexican restaurant or
whatever)..
So far I've found any limiting diet (and this includes very low carb,
though not maintenance low carb) to be too hard to stick with long
term.. Do you have this problem with your diet?

Hi Kita,
I am not 100% raw. I can't stick to that due to the type of jobs I take -
where often, I have to eat the food provided. And, I really like a good
pasta dish when I'm in a restaurant. So, I'm very flexible with my eating
and it isn't limiting at all.
I weight 134ish. I'm just under 5'4. My thyroid disease makes it difficult
to lose weight but I have lost 47 pounds. The thing about eating your
natural diet (which I believe this is) is that your body will normalize to
its correct weight and maintain it. Usually, people lose too much weight at
first while the body is detoxing. Then the body rebuilds itself and they
start to gain weight back. We also stress exercising as the proper way to
bulk up instead of putting on bulk with food. However, some raw foodists I
know do look too skinny. While many of them are "just right."
We eat raw nuts, not roasted.
It will be a cold day in hell before I give up cheese completely.
There are raw cheeses but I haven't tried them yet.
I have never had a problem sticking to my diet because the success of any
diet is being able to eat the foods you love. And I love salads and fruit
smoothies. I encountered problems when I went through huge stress after
moving up here. I've been emotionally eating so my raw intake has dropped
from 95% to about 50%. But it's been climbing on back up there. When I
indulge I indulge in bread and cheese and peanut butter.
Take care,
ar

Aren't foods that cause a spike in blood sugar, like fruit juice
alone, or certain fruits (ie. bananas which are very high on the
glycemic index), bad for acne?
