Please advise on accutane dosages
Posted by ABC Diablo

I am fully aware that accutane has many potential risks, but I am willing to
take those chances and self-administer the drug because I can not afford a
dermatologist at this time.

Could someone advise me on the safest way to do this?

There is NO WAY to safely do this without medical assistance! You need
blood testing before starting and during the use of this med. Are you
really willing to potentially risk your life or at least your health?

One thing for sure, if you are female, make sure you have GREAT birth
control, or be willing to go through with an abortion if you end up
pregnant, because that stuff can cause SERIOUS birth defects, and no one in
their right mind would want to give birth to a child they created while on
Accutane!

The cost of a dermatologist is a relatively small percentage of the total
cost of a full accutane course.
Even with my enthusiasm for the drug I wouldn't advise anyone to
self-administer this drug unless it was for subsequent courses, having had
proven tolerance to it through previous testing.

Liver damage is potentially fatal. It is essential that you have correct
testing. You may already have abnormal liver function with no symptoms and
this is why there is a pre-course test done to both establish a base-line
and to check that the liver is healthy in the first place.

If you need the cheapest possible method of obtaining a safe course, first
go to a derm and get your testing done. Then use the prescription to order
the drug online from the cheapest source, which is currently Europharmacy
for those with genuine prescriptions. If you chose the new generic (
accutane is now out of patent ) then you will save more money.

You must then return for your monitor testing, usually around 4-6 weeks into
a course. At that point you may find your dose adjusted according to LFTs
and physical tolerances.

Seemingly in contradiction of my own advice, I would continue to
self-prescribe if necessary ( I use long-term, low-dose accutane ) but I do
have an established history of good tolerance from three courses over ten
years, and I currently have full LFTs done every six months. I know I could
continue without supervision, but currently I can relax in the knowledge
that I'm not in any danger, hidden or otherwise.

Save a few dollars, or stay safe. Not a particularly difficult choice in my
opinion.

Ok, it seems that I should try a doctor first. But what entails the high
costs you listed? The drugs themselves? Because I have found some Canadian
and Mexican online vendors that seem cheaper than American drug stores.
Could you tell me what the typical costs of the drug are?

Isn't there generic coming out soon?
I remember it being announced a few months ago, don't know if that was
just a press release in advance of when it's available..

I second that.

My derm tested my liver function before I started, and every couple of
months while I was on accutane

Birth control is vital as it does cause nasty birth defects.

I have no idea what dosage I was on, not sure if it's worked out by body
weight, severity of acne or if there's a standard dose for the first course.

Most overseas places sell low dosage...20mg pills. The 700$US price is for
one month's supply, 40mg pills, twice a day (80mg total per day). The amount
you take is based on your weight... 1mg per day per kilo of body weight
split into two doses...AM and PM.
