- Pantethine
- Posted by NewEuropeGuy
I have been on B5 doses 0.3-4.5g/day for 2 years. Last month I ordered
B5 from podomedi.de and instead of B5 they sent me Pantethine. I
wonder if anyone has some experience with Pantethine instead of B5.
Should I return it or start taking Pantethine.
Pantethine is closer to CoA, but it has different dosage and different
effects on cholesterol etc.. Is it safer or not? What is a Pantethine
dosage equivalent to 1g Pantothenic acid?

Some have results with Pantethine, some don't. Fewer have tried it
because it's way more expensive (Usually about 4x as much or more). But
for those that had it work great, apparently 900mg is equivalent to 10g
of pantothenic acid. So a much safer dose!
I'd give it a try, fwiw.

well what I was worried about was the different effects of pantethine.
Pantethine affects blood serum lipid levels, which pantothenic acid
does not.
Can there be something as too low lipid levels?
The other thing I read was that pantetheine affects CNS in that it
depletes somatostatin (in rats, only when intravenously injected).
Isn't pantothenic acid safer, even if doses are big? I hope this
pantethine is simply better, but there was no research on its use to
with acne patients.

Pantethine is further along the CoA pathway, but since no one (yet)
knows for sure how or why Pantothenic Acid works for acne, it's
absolutely impossible at this point to say whether that would have any
effect on efficacy for treating acne. Pantethine has shown results on
cholesterol while pantothenic acid has not. HOWEVER, AFAIK, megadoses of
pantothenic acid were not used (to see if it lowered lipid levels). So
therefore, pantethine might just be far more active or potent than
pantothenic acid. This is what is generally believed, but I don't think
it's been proven.
As far as I know, absolutely not. There's no studies on megadosing long
term with pantothenic acid. If theory is correct, and pantethine is far
more potent, and 900mg is equivalent to 10grams of pantothenic acid,
then pantethine is far safer. The sheer volume of megadosing any vitamin
is very hard on the liver and kidneys. Not to mention that urinating the
excess is partly what causes the depletion of other b vitamins, which is
how problems occur.
Again, remember the first rule of toxicity: The DOSE makes the poison.
I hope this
There's no real research on pantothenic acid and acne, either! The Leung
studies were not double blind, no control was used, etc etc. He just
gave some people really high doses of a vitamin and noticed their acne
diminished. It was not done under research standards.
If you have some, give it a try. You'll quickly notice if it isn't
working for you. If you've taken grams and grams of pantothenic acid
every day, I would not worry about a 900mg dose of pantethine!!!
For some, it works, for some it doesn't. If it works, you're far better
off taking 900mg of pantethine than you are taking 10g of pantothenic
acid, IMO!

I used Pantethine for a year or so. I used Pantethine alone, but I have no
idea what dose of it is needed for acne. I did not want to take a dose that
was higher than was used in studies, especially since it has not been used
by the general public that long -- not like B5 which has been around
forever. I have been using only b5 for the last year or so. I tried
different doses of Pantethine and B5 alone and in combination. I never
noticed Pantethine having any effect over just the b5. I did not think
Pantethine alone worked as well, but I did not test it very thoroughly. So,
I have stuck with B5, and it's cheaper even at the much higher doses. I have
been taking about 6 grams per day for a couple years now. It works great, my
face is much much much clearer and calm. I never get cystic acne anymore.
Those were nasty. It's not completely clear all the time, and I still use
Azelex too. I have a small pimple or two once every other week, nothing
major, and they disappear quickly. And, my face is less greasy. I am totally
sold on B5. I wish more people knew about it -- and weren't so scared to use
a dose that actually works.

Sorry, English is not my mother tongue. I did not understand correctly
why did you switch from Pantethine to B5?
Was Pantethine not working for you or you just wanted to try B5 and
see if it works better?
If the effect is the same, I think I would prefer a smaller dose, as
Kita suggested. But you chose B5. Why?
cheers

Because B5 is much cheaper even though you need more of it.
The pantethine was not working as well as the B5 at the dose I was taking,
and I didn't know what dose should work and I did not want to mess around
with higher doses of pantethine.
