- 29 still with acne
- Posted by frybread
Hello, I need some help for anyone who can offer it.
I'm 29 -- will be 30 in September -- and I've had a resurgence of acne
in the last three years.
It is somewhat worse than it was when I was in high school in that it
is not only on my face but on my back, chest and somewhat on my
shoulder.
Currently, I only use Proactiv, but that does not seem to do to much
for my face and, obviously, nothing for my back or chest.
In the past, I've been on antibiotics (which really upset my stomach)
retin-a and a stronger benzyl peroxide solution than Pro Active.
I was wondering what I could do, not only for my face but for the acne
on the body. I am hesitant to do Accutane because of its expense, but
I am almost 30 and I am very tired of dealing with zits.
If anyone can give me some advice, I'd very much appreciate it.

dandruff shampoo that contains pyrithione zinc (Zincon, DHS Zinc, some
versions of Head & Shoulders, and lots of generic competition). This
ingredient is a very active and broad spectrum antimicrobial agent.
Actually it is a biocide. That means it kills anything, if given
enough exposure, including your skin cells, so the trick is to
optimize the exposure to maximize the antimicrobial action without
getting the chemical equivalent of a sunburn. This trade off depends
on the sensitivity of the skin in question.
For back and chest, I suggest you try smearing a layer of the shampoo
on a while before bathing, say, 5 to 30 minutes. Then shower it off
thoroughly. Pyrithione zinc is almost insoluble in water, it is
slightly soluble in skin oil, so it will diffuse into your skin and
remain after the shampoo is rinsed off. So rinse and rub till no
trace of slippery is left to prevent that dry, tight, detergent
residue feeling. This also means that it remains effective for a
while, perhaps two days, so this treatment often works well no oftener
than every other day. But if while you are waiting, it starts to feel
warm, your skin is telling you that time is up.
The same thing can be used on sensitive skin, like your face, but it
will take a shorter soak before it starts to irritate.
Whatever you do, don't apply it and take a nap.
If you try this, I would be interested in hearing the result for you.

I did accutane when I was 36 and again last year (42) and it's the only
thing that's ever really helped for me. Hopefully the zits will never
come back. 30 years is too long to deal with them.

Maybe you could ask your derm to try a much lower dosage of Accutane to
get around your problem with the side effects. If you wanted the same
cumulative dosage, you could make the course much longer than the usual
4 months.

Ok, thanx for all the replies. I'll try out some of these and see if
they work. I also think I need to cut out alcohol almost completely
because I think it's contributing to my breakouts.

If you want to metabolize alcohol a lot more efficiently, take one of
those big yellow B-mins vitamin tablets before drinking. Alcohol
quickly depletes your stock of B vitamins and when you run low, your
liver has a tougher time dealing with it.
No hangovers, but very bright yellow pee.
