- 2 Years And Still On B5 - Has There Been ANY Real Research Into This Treatment?
- Posted by phrenzy
This is just outrageous. As far as I'm concerned - we are basically
at a point where we here at this newsgroup ALONE have proven the
effectiveness of this treatment. It has certainly been shown to not
be 100% effective for all - but there are cases that are all but proof
positive.
In my own case - It's like clock work.
Take B5 = Clear Skin
Don't take B5 = Oily Broken Out Skin
"Kita" from this newsgroup seems to have made a career out of making a
boogie man out of B5 on this ng. Every post I see from him brings up
negative spins and POSSIBLE terrible effects on the "guinea pigs" etc.
Good god - He sounds like G W Bush crowing about those WMDs and the
smoking gun "coming in the form of a mushroom cloud"
My question is - While Kita has obviously spent countless hours trying
to validate his pre-conceived notions that B5 is the devil - has
anybody actually done REAL research in the U.S. on this therapy.
I find it unbelievable that the FDA or somebody has not conducted a
wide study of this. It really is enough to make me believe in big
drug company conspiracies.
Anyway, I swear - one of my dreams is to get rich and fund a REAL
research project into B5 and it's treatment of acne. After what the
positive things it has done for me - I want to find out all of the
REAL pros and cons of B5 and give the public the RIGHT information.

Actually, I've mellowed out in the past year or two!
You obviously don't read my posts, because then you would know that I
support under 2grams a day for healthy people. You'd know that I have
spent probably a hundred or more hours reading Pantothenic Acid research
papers and talking to researchers. You'd know that my only goal is to
counteract the ignorance with which people recommend 10g doses as being
"safe". And you would know that I am all about information, both pro and
con.
And, by the way, you'd also know that I am not a guy.
So get your facts straight. But I am honored that you find me such a
villain!

All she says is that 10g a day has not been proven safe. We are guinea
pigs. These statements are all true. If she gets a report of an adverse
reaction, she posts it here, which is a very responsible thing to do. I
don't detect any bias except for one time when I didn't like the way she
stated something and you can read that thread for yourself. Personally, I
have stopped taking it because I am putting Mandelic Acid Serum to the test.
So far, it has cleared me up better than any topical, but not as well as
pantothenic acid. If the serum stops working, then I will go back to B5. It
will be interesting to see if B5 begins to work again like it did for me
early on. So far, it has been the most effective acne treatment I've ever
used.

10 g/day since October 6th. Haven't missed a day. Still waiting for 100%
clearing. I don't think it's going to live up to its billing of "clear skin
in 60 days" for me.

i've been on 10g a day for about 4 months now.. its isnt a "cure" thats for
sure.. but it definatley keeps my breakouts at bay.. i tried coming off it
for a while and broke out soon after.. believe me when i say i've tried
every regime out there.. and the combination of B5 and J+J clean and clear
twice a day has had my skin the best its ever been in 15 years.. 4 months
in and still going strong..
as for being guinea pigs.. whats new? next time someone finds some new
"wonder" cure lotion/cream on some shabby ass looking web site that looks
like it was put together by your 14 year old cousin... and we all go out and
order it.. just oink.

No, I haven't had any side effects at all.

I think B5 is related to regulating your adrenal function and the
release of cortisol in your body.
If B5 works for you, you may also want to reduce stress. Stop drinking
coffee, it increases cortisol production, something which b5 fights
against. B5 is the stress vitamin. Coffee is a know stresser and has a
very negative effect on health.
Just my opinion. But I respect the views of Kita. I think there should
be caution in using any alternative treatment. But I agree, B5 is a
very good cure for somepeople.

I pretty much agree. Nobody knows, including me, but my guess (fwiw) is
that the Pantothenic Acid somehow is impacting glucocorticoid activity.
Although topical glucocorticoids can cause acne like eruptions,
systemically it is anti-inflammatory. Glucocorticoids help with stress
and maintain blood sugar levels, both which impact acne. The results and
actions fall in line with glucocorticoid action.
The symptoms of excess glucocorticoids is very similiar to some of the
side effects listed for mega B5. The concern here is that cushing's
syndrom or other related glucocorticoid related damage does not show up
until very (possibly too) late (because of the anti-inflammatory effects).
Without re-inventing the wheel, I think this action best fits in line
with what we know so far about pantothenic acid and acne.
But it also could be that an excess of another B vitamin has the side
effect of acne. And by taking excessive B-5, it depletes this other B
vitamin excess.. eliminating the acne. I think this is possible, but
less likely, since the symptoms of deficiency and excess of the vitamins
is pretty well explored. (Which is why the "marginal B5 deficiency
theory" doesn't hold water for me).
